Dr. Pi-Hua Chuang, DMA in choral conducting, University of Maryland

She then pursued graduate studies in USA in 2000 and acquired her master’s degree in choral conducting from Boston Conservatory in 2002. In the same year, she was offered a full teaching assistantship from University of Maryland and became the only doctoral applicant accepted by the school’s Choral Conducting Program. Her advisor, Dr. Edward Maclary, once the assistant conductor to Robert Shaw, applauded her in public as “the one and only conductor capable of making significant change of choral voice in thirty minutes.” During graduate years, she was the music director and conductor of the Women’s Chorus, and lectured on undergraduate conducting classes in the School of Music. After earning DMA in 2005, Dr. Chuang returned to Taiwan and embarked on a music career by teaching in plenty of outstanding music schools, including the Department of Music of National Pingtung University, National Kaohsiung Normal University, and the Institute of Music of Tainan Theological College and Seminary. She was also an adjunct assistant professor at the General Education Center of Dayeh University and the acting deputy conductor of Taiwan National Choir.
Dr. Chuang is an expert in conducting choral-orchestral works and has demonstrated outstanding achievements in choreography and theater production. Under her design, choir performance is always distinctive, diverse, and dynamic.
Currently Dr. Chuang works as an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Music at National Taichung University of Education. She is also the artistic director of Taichung Artist Choir and the conducting director of Syuan-Yun Choir, Shao-Yin Choir, Jing-Chen Choir, Contextus Men's Choir, Chung Shan Medical University Choir, National Taichung First Senior High School Choir, and Taichung Municipal Taichung Girls’ Senior High School Choir. Many choirs that she conducts have won first prize in preliminaries and finals of the National Student Competition of Music. With her leadership, the Taichung Artist Female Choir won the Excellence Award in the National Choral Competition in 2009 and was the only winning team not from northern Taiwan. In July 2014, the Taichung Artist Chamber Choir even won a gold medal in the category of contemporary music in the 8th World Choir Games in Latvia.
